DesignOpenTable

DOT – DesignOpenTable // conversations about “how it works” and much more

Devised by Alok Nandi, Architempo, DesignOpenTable is a place to explore the multiple dimensions of design, beyond the approaches usually given to the word design.
Interaction Design, Service Design, Experience Design, Strategic Design, … are actual praxis occupying thousands of people in the world and showing how design, a set of (often) human-centered activities, can help shape systems for well-being, in connection to the works of policy makers, technologists, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and managers.

Maja Kuzmanovic, Fo.am and Lode De Cock, Tribu, will be discussing the nature of design and designing environments from different perspectives. An evening convened by Alok Nandi and Jens Rodieck.

Maja Kuzmanovic is a generalist, with an academic background in Design Forecasting and Interactive Media, whose professional experience includes design (of various flavours), facilitation & transdisciplinary leadership. Maja is the founder, principal invigorator and chef de cuisine of FoAM, a distributed, transdisciplinary organisation, guided by the motto “grow your own worlds”. Prior to FoAM, she experimented with MR & VR in research institutes across Europe (GMD, CWI, Starlab), lectured (HKU), as well as collaborated with technological arts collectives such as Post World Industries and Pips:Lab. Her particular approach to people & technology has been recognised by the MIT’s Technology review & the World Economic Forum, awarding her the titles of Top 100 Young Innovator (1999) & Young Global Leader (2006).

Lode De Cock is owner and founder of Tribù nv. He studied civil engineering construction at Ku Leuven. In 1987, after the sudden death of his father, he took over the management of his father’s import agency in garden furniture. Very soon he created his own design – trendsetting and high-quality with an exclusive, but timeless design – a reaction to the plastic furniture and heavy, classic teak of that time. Early 90’s, he decided to work with designers with whom he creates collections from a totally different perspective: the garden and terrace as an extension of the architecture of the building. It made him one of the pioneers of a totally new concept of ‘outdoor furniture’. In 1998 he stopped all import activities and changed the name of the company to Tribù.
Thanks to a continuous holding on to the same, persistent style and design, Tribù has now grown into a high-end company with international fame that exports to more than 50 countries, with a sales of 13 million €.
